Power Map

Where the country stands: who holds the seats, what officials push and block, and where words, votes and company plans collide.

Overall control (composition index)

Method: equal-weight average of the five bodies' right-side (Republican) share. Shows: how much of the system each side holds, all bodies together. Does not show: who can actually pass a given law (the presidency's veto, the Senate filibuster and court rulings work differently; the stall map will show that).

Independents who caucus with a party are counted with that party. Vacancies and split legislatures are left out of each share. The Supreme Court is counted by the party of the appointing president, which is not the same as how a justice votes.
